However it is not as daunting as one might think, and doing them yourself can save you hundreds of dollars! Usually the base for the sew in hair extensions are braids, meaning you will need to either braid your hair or have someone do it for you. The most popular braid patterns are cornrows going straight back, other patterns include braiding the hair in a circle around the head or a combination of straight back cornrows and the circular pattern. Whatever braid patterned is decided upon make sure to leave out enough of your own hair to cover any tracks that will be exposed, also leave out some of your hair on the sides and in the back (near nape area) to ensure that the sew in hair extensions look as realistic as possible.
It is important to not neglect your hair underneath after applying the hair extensions, as the hair will become smelly and possibly begin to mold underneath if not properly maintained. One way to your own natural hair healthy is to make sure that you wash the braids here is how it can be done—use a small applicator bottle and fill it with water and add a little of your favorite shampoo to the mixture, shake well then squirt the water in between the braids, making sure to get the scalp area. Then slightly massage the braids, refill the bottle with water and whatever conditioner you decide (not a deep conditioner though!) and repeat the process as stated above with the shampoo. The final step is to run water over your hair to ensure that all of the conditioner is removed from their proceed with styling. Sew in hair extensions on average can last from four to six weeks if properly maintained-although there have been instances where people have left them in longer.
